It's that time of year again! Here are some pertinent details regarding singing at Poly High School next year. We encourage anyone interested in singing to consider participating in one of our eight vocal ensembles. We won't turn you away; there's a place for everyone's voice!

  • Inspirational Glee (Course #3418) - No audition required! This group sings an extremely wide variety of genres, from traditional spirituals to contemporary pop music and everything in between. IG, as we call it, focuses on singing culturally significant repertoire of all styles.
  • Grace (Course #3420) - Audition required. Grace is a more advanced version of IG, performing a similar style of music, but with auditioned membership.
  • Chorale (Course #3397) - Audition required. This is the first of four mixed voices (SATB) traditional/classical music ensembles, and is considered our beginner/intermediate choral ensemble.
  • Cecilian Choir (Course #3406) - Audition required. Cecilian Singers is the second of our mixed voice traditional music ensemble, and is considered our intermediate/advanced choral ensemble.
  • Chamber Singers (Course #3423) - Audition required. Chamber Singers is our third mixed voice music ensemble, comprised of some of our most advanced singers. It meets during 0 period.
  • Madrigals (Course #3423) - Audition required. A subset of Chamber Singers, this group of 12 singers performs primarily Renaissance early Baroque music and meets just once a week.
  • Jazz 2 (Course #3420) - Audition required. Jazz 2 is the second of our two vocal jazz ensembles, ranging in membership from 12-16, all individually-microphoned. They perform a cappella and with rhythm section.
  • Jazz 1 (Course #3407) - Audition required. Jazz 1 is our premiere vocal ensemble, ranging in membership from 12-16, all individually-microphoned. They perform a cappella and with rhythm section, and are regular festival and competition participants.

If you're interested in joining us, you have a few options:

  • Inspirational Glee requires no audition. Just tell your counselor, and they'll put you in the class!
  • Grace Chorale, Cecilian, and Chamber - Auditions begin after Spring Break, and incoming freshman may audition during the first week of school. Auditions involve preparing 30 seconds of anything you'd like to sing (a cappella), and doing some tonal recognition and part testing at the piano, both of which require no preparation. These auditions begin on April 9 and continue until April 19, during nutrition, lunch, and after school (but by appointment only).
  • Madrigals is hand-selected by the director from members already in Chamber Choir.
  • Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 - there will be a separate, more in depth audition with the following requirements:
    • Choose one of the two standards available in the Downloads section of this site (login and account required). The choices are "Cry Me A River" or "Bewitched." You must sing them in the provided key (no transposition allowed), and you must perform with live accompaniment (provided).
    • Learn your preferred part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass) for the excerpt of the required a cappella ensemble song, "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square."
      • The excerpt begins at pickup to Rehearsal A and ends at the fermata two measures before Rehearsal C. A total of 19 measures of music
      • Rehearsal parts are also now available on this website in the Downloads section.
    • The audition will be held immediately after school in the Choir Room (216) on Thursday, April 12, 2018.
      • All auditioning singers will be asked to stay until the conclusion of the audition (approximately 4:30pm), unless you absolutely must leave early.
      • The audition process goes something like this:
        • We'll run all the songs all together once or twice, just to get everyone warmed up
        • A mixed quartet (one soprano, one alto, one tenor, one bass) will be called at random to perform the ensemble excerpt. Singers will perform on microphones, but your use of the microphone will not be a criteria for your audition. It's simply to hear you better.
        • We'll mix up the process by hearing solos in between, and some of you may be asked to sing multiple times, and some won't. Try not to read too much into this... ⯑
    • Current members of Jazz 1 will make themselves available (usually during lunch) to help teach and coach the required materials.
  • Results for all auditions will be posted by April 25, 2018 at 2:40pm. Lists will be posted on the Choir Room (216) door, as well as on this website.
