(update: 9/15/17)

Only 280 days until we leave! Hey, at least we're under 300 days...

We're starting to nail down more details for our upcoming trip, but just a few items for you today:

  • Please remember the required meeting on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 6:30pm-7:30pm in the Poly Choir Room (216). You attendance with a parent/guardian is required!
  • We're preparing our repertoire, and pending approval of our set, our concert set will include TWELVE songs in FIVE languages, running about 45 minutes long. We may have to reduce our programmed set (due to time limitations), but we're very excited to get ready for our concerts abroad. Teaser: we're including a song from the musical, Hamilton, which should be a lot of fun!
  • PLEASE KEEP UP WITH YOUR PAYMENTS!

(update: 3/16/17)

The initial registration has now passed, and we have 45 registered participants! In addition to three group leader and assistant group leader spots, we have FIVE spots left, then we begin a waitlist for participants after we reach 53. After 53, we have to request a larger coach bus. If we can secure a larger coach, we can take our group size up to 60.

In other news, we haven't yet secured enough string players to complete the minimum orchestration, which is a balanced quartet. Here's where we are now:

  • Currently, we have one violinist and one cellist registered.
  • At minimum, we need one more violinist and a violist.
  • Talk to your friends! Ask your string friends to consider participating.

In the event we don't secure enough strings to make a complete ensemble:

  • Valid only for strings, you will have the option to cancel your registration and receive 100% of your (normally non-refundable) deposit back.
  • Alternatively, you may participate as a singer in the choral ensemble, or as a non-performer
    • Even if you don't have a lot of singing experience, I encourage you to consider this option (if necessary)
  • Lastly, we will look into commissioning music suited for whatever orchestration we end up with.

Itinerary (as of 3/16/17)

Also, we have (more or less) settled on our ITINERARY, though it will remain a work-in-progress, even after we've left. For now, here are the highlights:

  • Friday, June 22 - Meet at LAX International Airport for our overnight flight(s) to Athens. Flight info will be updated on this page once we have that information, usually about 6 months prior to departure.
  • Saturday, June 23 - Arrival in Athens, where we meet our Tour Manager and our coach driver for the Greece portion of the trip. We'll transfer to the hotel together, check-in and relax for a bit, then head out for dinner. Afterwards, we'll do a brief walking tour of the Plaka, a historical neighborhood in Athens and central area for tourism. Hotel info will be posted as soon as it is available, usually 3-6 months before departure.
  • Sunday, June 24 - Morning sightseeing with a local guide, featuring the Acropolis and Parthenon, as well as the new Acropolis Museum. We tentatively* have a late afternoon liturgical service* we are participating in, followed by a group dinner. After dinner, we have our first full concert*.
  • Monday, June 25 - Full day cruise in the Saronic Gulf, including stops at Hydra, Aegina, and Poros. You'll have time to swim in the Mediterranean, shop at local vendors, and eat local delicacies. We'll return to Athens in time for our group dinner.
  • Tuesday, June 26 - We leave Athens today for Delphi, home of the great oracle of Apollo.  Explore the Archaeological Museum of Delphi and visit the Temple of Apollo. We'll continue to Patras to board our overnight ferry to the Italian port of Brindisi.
  • Wednesday, June 27 - After disembarking from our ferry, we'll meet out Italian coach bus driver and continue on a scenic drive along olive groves across southern Italy to Sorrento. After hotel check-in, we'll head to our group dinner, then have an opportunity for a brief "impromptu" concert at Sorrento Cathedral or San Giuseppe Shrine*. After our brief performance, we'll have some free time to soak in your first Italian summer evening. You can have gelato from the same place the Pope gets his!
  • Thursday, June 28 - This morning, we'll head off for the Eternal City, Rome! But, before we leave Sorrento, we'll stop at a local farm where they specialize in freshly prepared mozzarella and limoncello. We'll watch mozzarella being made, then taste the freshly made cheese! We'll check in to our hotel, then immediately leave to visit the Colosseum (entrance included). Take all the "thumbs down" photos you like! We'll have dinner together, then play the rest of the evening by ear...
  • Friday, June 29 - We begin today with a sightseeing tour in the coach bus with a local guide, doing a panoramic drive of the city (the best and quickest way to see a lot in Rome). We'll continue with our local guide to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, continuing to St. Peter's Basilica, giving us commentary via personal headsets. This afternoon, we'll transfer to a local restaurant for a fun pizza-making lunch! Pending approval, we'll then participate in services in St. Peter's, followed by dinner.
  • Saturday, June 30 - A morning visit to the Roman Catacombs, then a free afternoon in Rome. We'll have our final concert tonight* in Rome, likely Sant'Agnese in Agone* in Piazza Navona. We'll celebrate our tour with our final dinner together!
  • Sunday, July 1 - Transfer to the airport with our Tour Manager for our return flight to the good ol' US of A.
    • *All performances and venues are pending approval and factors such as availability, appropriate fit for our ensemble, and other factors.

(update: 10/25/16)

We just added a couple of itinerary inclusions, both involving food:

  • Pizza making lunch! On one of the afternoons in Rome, we will be doing a pizza making activity where we each make an authentic Italian pizza, bake it, then eat it!
    • Normally, two meals a day are included (breakfast and lunch are included daily), but since we are adding this pizza-making lunch, we've also added an extra group dinner on this day.
  • Pending: Gelato tasting tour! We're waiting on details on this one, but it involves tasting real Italian gelato, so how could it not be awesome?
  • Both these added activities will increase the tour cost, but not by much.
